Please be aware that there is a non-refundable $250 processing fee required after you submit this form. You will receive an email with the payment link. Payment must be received by the residency petition deadline that corresponds to the term for which you are requesting your residency change.

You do not need to submit this form if you have been approved for a petition to change your residency at another UM System school and we have the same residency type here at UMKC*. If you have had a successful petition to change your residency at any of the UM System schools, you can provide us with information about that process via email at residency@umkc.edu.

*This excludes the Illinois Rate at UMSL since UMKC does not offer that rate.

Proof that your purpose in Missouri is for employment or retirement -- This is normally a letter from the employer which includes an acknowledgement of full-time employment, when the employment began, and the employer’s address and contact information. For proof, a retiree can submit a Social Security verification or a letter from former employer.

Incomplete petitions cannot be evaluated which will cause a delay in determining your residency status. After initial review, additional documents may be requested and required. If you have previously submitted a petition and are now petitioning for a different semester, you must submit all of your documents again as documents from earlier petitions are not kept.

If the student is under 21 and dependent on his or her parent/guardian, the documents submitted must pertain to the parents. Students who are under 21 and independent from their parents need to prove that they do not depend on their parents. If the student is legally emancipated, then a document indicating that should be submitted. An independent student should submit his or her own tax documents as well as those of the student’s parents to prove that the parents do not claim the student as a dependent.
